Why does my student's name turn into an animal name?

99math checks the names students choose for themselves. If a name is flagged as inappropriate, it's replaced with an animal name. The filter isn't always right, so a real name can sometimes be flagged by mistake.

This mostly affects accounts students create themselves. Accounts you create on your Classes page keep the student's username instead. Very short names (for example Al or Jo) and names in non-Latin letters can also get an animal username.

What you can do:

• Turn off nicknames for the class: go to Classes, open Class settings and turn off Nicknames in group practice. Students then show up under their username.
• Or the student can change their nickname in Pet Squad: menu, Settings & Profile, Public player name, then Update profile.

During a group game, students who are signed in are shown on your screen by their first name. Ask students to sign in before the game, so their real names are displayed.
